HEEL & TOE PROGRAM SKIPS INTO ACTION

The Heel & Toe Program began in 2006 and allows students to

read and earn points for the 10,000 library books without AR

quizzes available. Students select a book (with approval for its

reading level), read it, and complete an activity about the book for

points. The number of points are based on the number of pages

and difficulty of the book. Mrs. Forman assigns points on an

individual basis. Points earned will be added to the weekly

Footsteps program.

This new program has shaken some cobwebs out of many of these

books which haven't left the shelf since the AR program's inception

in 2001. The students have been drawing some creative cartoon

strips and costumes from the books' eras. They have also written

several letters to the authors and compared character traits.

This has helped boost many of their footstep averages.

*******The students must read and quiz on two Accelerated

Reader books for every Heel and Toe book they do. They must

earn AR points each quarter BEFORE the Heel & Toe points can

be recorded.

Archbishop Eldon Curtis Visited in 2004

Archbishop Eldon Curtis celebrated a Mass and blessed our new

Media Center & the computer room on October 27th, 2004..

Father Grueue and Father Hannefeld escorted Archbishop Curtis

throughout the school.

Birthday Book Club

The BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB is an on-going fund raiser for the

Library. Each student receives a birthday card inviting them to

donate $5 to the library to join the Birthday Book Club. If a student

brings $5 each to the Library, he/she may select a book from the

Birthday shelf. A sticker is placed on the inside front cover with the

student's name and birthdate. That student becomes the first one to

check out the book for two weeks. After it is returned, the book is

placed in our library for other students to enjoy. This is a great way

to get new books added to our collection! And the students can

see their names in the book for years to come! And remember...

Happy Birthday to Everyone!!!

Accelerated Reader Program Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a software program that helps teachers

manage and monitor a student's reading growth. Studies have

shown that the AR program improves students' critical thinking

skills and increases self confidence. It also provides the teacher

with a valuable tool for assessment of individual reading and

literacy skills. Our goal is to help the students develop a love of

reading by choosing books of their interest and that are in a

comfortable zone (neither too easy nor too difficult.)

Students begin the program with a reader assessment quiz (STAR)

taken in the computer lab. This test is taken periodically to assess

the students' growth in reading levels. The outcome of this quiz

determines each student's reading level in the AR program. Most

often, the reading level is a broad range which ensures the student

has a wide variety of books to choose from. The student then

selects books based on their interests and reading level. Once the

student reads a book, a short comprehension quiz is taken to

determine how well the student understood what was read. Book

quizzes may be taken in the classroom, computer lab, or Library

Media Center.

We now have over 10,000 books in our library that have AR

quizzes. Not all of our books have quizzes available. However, as

soon as they become available (and as soon as there is money in

the budget, we purchase as many quizzes as we can.)

The AR books in the library are color-coded and marked with their

reading level to help the students find books in their reading range.

The library staff is always willing to help students find books of

interest within their range.

Footsteps Program

The primary goal of this program is to help our students become

better readers. The object is for students to "take steps to reading

success."

Students in each grade level earn a footstep after attaining a pre-

determined number of points in the AR program. (Second grade

need 2 points to earn a foot. Third grade needs 3 points to earn a

foot, and so on...)

Qualifying points are for books that are read independently and

within the student's reading range. (Books read by parents or

teachers or books not in their reading range do not count for

footsteps.*** Students can earn points for feet only for books they

have read independently.***

Students earning the required points in grade 2-6 will receive a

'foot' token to be worn on a chain or on their shoe laces. Students

will receive their chain when they earn their first token in the

program. The replacement cost for lost or broken chains is 50

cents. Lost foot tokens cannot be replaced.

Students in Junior High will earn points for their class goals. Points

earned over the grade requirements will go towards buying items

from the Junior High Treasure Chest on one day at the end of each

quarter.
